Thai agricultural sector series: Raising productivity - 4. Precision Agriculture

Thai agricultural sector series is a special article by ListenField board of director, Dr. Supavud Saicheua.
This series will provide macro view of agricultural sector in Thailand and how ListenField technology can help to solve the problem at the end of the series.

Let's begin...

The remaining factors of production that could be tapped to achieve this are: capital, entrepreneurship and precision agriculture technology.

Begin first with precision technology.

This means technology that can accurately assess the right soil quality for each crop.

The technology must also be able to provide actionable data on the type and amounts of fertilizers needed to ensure optimal crop growth from planting date to harvest date.

Crop health overall will also need to be closely monitored by the technology to ensure proper nurturing while minimizing the use of labor, water and other resources.

Finally, accurately pinpointing the optimal harvest date will help maximize crop quality and yield. This will enable proper preparations and resource allocation for processing and distribution which cuts down on waste and reduce harvesting costs and delays.

Developing the “right” technology in the lab and in pilot projects is in itself a necessary but not sufficient condition.  The more challenging stage is attracting enough risk capital combined with the ability to scale-up the technology successfully. Success at this juncture requires outstanding entrepreneurship and management skills.  The desired outcome is to produces tangible results in the field in terms of significant cost reduction, as well as higher and more predictable yields.

Then comes the need to gain wider acceptance of the technology (likely to involve making the technology accessible for hundreds of thousands of smaller-scale farmers). This is needed bring about widespread adoption of the precision technology so that the precision agriculture technology can make a meaningful impact in terms of transforming Thailand’s traditional agriculture, putting the sector on track towards a more sustainable, green and prosperous future.

End of the series.
